Dwight D. Eisenhower
“This world of ours... must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be, instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect.”
– Dwight Eisenhower |
Dwight Eisenhower was the 34th president of the United States of America. He rose to fame during WWII as a lieutenant colonel and general. Eisenhower was a brilliant military strategist and was given five stars. He led the Allied Expeditionary Force and commanded one of the most powerful forces ever assembled under one person. He was appointed by President Harry Truman to be the supreme commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces. During his presidency he was able to calm the fears of communism directed at the Soviet Union, and he ended the war in Korea. In his first term as president, he diminished the anti-communist feelings culminated by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Eisenhower tried to calm down the Cold War era tensions. He worked on sending covert operations against communism around the world. He would not speak of it in public but he secretly worked on getting rid of McCarthy’s influences and worked to fix the civil liberties that were violated of many citizens. Eisenhower was not a very strong president so he was hesitant on the idea of desegregation. He believed that it should be a gradual process and later he did go on to sign a civil rights legislation for the federal protection of black voters. |
